How to compress a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Pick a compression level. Recommended suits most files.
  3. Press Compress PDF.
  4. Check how much was saved, then download.
  • PDFs with photos or scans shrink the most; text-only PDFs are often already small.
  • If the PDF can't get any smaller, you'll get the original back.
  • Need it smaller still? Remove pages you don't need first.

Compress PDF: frequently asked questions

How do I reduce the size of a PDF?

Choose your PDF, pick a compression level and press Compress PDF. You will see how much smaller it is before downloading.

Which compression level should I use?

Recommended (150 dpi) suits most documents. Use Extreme (72 dpi) for the smallest file, for example to meet an email or form upload limit, and Light (300 dpi) when the PDF will be printed.

How do I compress a PDF to under 1 MB, 500 KB or 200 KB?

Try the Recommended level first. If it is still too big, use Extreme. Removing pages you do not need also makes a big difference.

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

PDFs that are mostly text are already compact. Compression helps most with scanned documents and PDFs that contain photos.
