Tax breakdown
| Net amount | ₹1,000.00 | before tax |
|---|---|---|
| CGST | ₹90.00 | 9%, within the same state |
| SGST / UTGST | ₹90.00 | 9%, within the same state |
| IGST | ₹180.00 | 18%, instead of CGST + SGST for sales to another state |
| Total GST | ₹180.00 | |
| Total amount | ₹1,180.00 |
How it's calculated
GST = ₹1,000.00 × 18% = ₹180.00
- Add GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100.
- Remove GST: net = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and GST = amount − net.
- Within a state, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. Between states, the full amount is IGST.
GST Calculator: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹1,000 at 18%, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180. Choose "Before GST" in the calculator to do this.
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Divide by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100. For ₹1,180 including 18% GST, the price before GST is ₹1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000. Choose "Including GST" in the calculator.
What are CGST, SGST and IGST?
For a sale within the same state, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST), for example 9% + 9% for 18%. For a sale to another state, the full rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST).
What are the current GST rates?
Since 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall under 5% or 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods, and special rates like 0.25% and 3% for a few items. The older 12% and 28% slabs are kept in the calculator for checking past invoices.
Why can't I just subtract 18% to remove GST?
Because GST is 18% of the price before tax, not of the total. Taking 18% off ₹1,180 gives ₹967.60, but the real pre-GST price is ₹1,000.
