URL Encode: frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding?
URL encoding (percent-encoding) replaces characters that aren't allowed in URLs with % and their hex code. A space becomes %20, & becomes %26 and é becomes %C3%A9.
Should I encode a single value or the whole URL?
Encode a single value (like a search term or query parameter) to escape everything, including & and =. Encode a whole URL to keep its structure (: / ? & = #) working while escaping spaces and other unsafe characters.
Is a space %20 or +?
Both are used. %20 works everywhere in a URL. + means a space only in query strings sent by HTML forms. Tick the + option if your system expects form encoding.
